Through
the use of a visual vocabulary based on traditional art materials,
I am trying to express an ongoing internal dialogue. Observance,
assimilation, and response through painting/drawing allow me to step
outside of each thought and examine its relevance while experimenting
with various media. The works attempt to expound on the definition
of drawing without leaving the basic tools. The images are representational,
stylized and simplified. The materials come from the most elemental
found in the history of mark making. Subject and process carry
an equal weight as both provide me with a degree of pleasure.
Transfiguration: female figures
The female figure is an icon chosen to represent creation, mortality
and immortality. The color glazes are applied in alternating
layers of pure red and blue until they become rich and burnished. The
figure emerges and evolves or dissolves into the canvas surface as
it balances color, texture and light.
Translucence: circle series
The circle series explores the possibilities of a simple gestural
mark. Life, death and rebirth are represented as I seek the connection
with my world. Past, present and future come together in the
sacred space.
Transcendence: ink/graphite drawings
The series of drawings/paintings break the silence of a raw canvas
and invite the viewer to linger and listen. The quiet space provides
relief from the chaos and complexity of contemporary life. After
studying Chinese brush and ink work I have adapted Eastern tools to
facilitate Western ideas.
